For content and SEO teams
Turn prompt and citation gaps into a roadmap
You already know how to make a page rank. The harder question is which page changes an answer. CiteTrail finds the prompts you lose and the sources you are missing from, ranks the work by what it is worth, then re-scans to check the work landed.
01: The shift
The citation is the new position
Sources, not links
An assistant does not hand your buyer ten blue links. It reads a handful of sources, composes an answer, and sometimes says where it got that. Being cited is the thing that replaced being ranked.
Domains you do not control
A large share of the sources shaping your category are review sites, editorial roundups and forum threads. You cannot publish your way onto all of them, but you can find out which ones decide the answer.
Evidence, not vibes
Every claim about your visibility opens into the runs behind it: the prompt, the answer text, the brands named, the sources cited. If a recommendation cannot show you its evidence, do not action it.
02: The gaps
Two kinds of gap, and they need different work
Prompt gaps
The buyer questions where you are absent or losing. Each carries a buyer-value score out of 100, so you can start with the ones that carry pipeline rather than the ones that annoy you most.
Citation gaps
The sources that shape answers in your category and never cite you. These are classified as editorial, review, community or owned, because a missing review-site listing and a missing forum thread are not the same job.
Illustrative
Source overlap
For a losing prompt, CiteTrail compares the sources behind your mentions with the sources behind a rival, and shows what is shared and what is theirs alone. The domains that are only theirs are the shortest route to changing the answer.
- Shared
- Sources you both appear in
- Only them
- Your roadmap
A shape, not a customer result. Real overlap is expressed as a percentage with the domains listed.
03: The roadmap
Typed work, ranked by what it is worth
Every gap becomes one of six action types, so the work lands with whoever actually does it.
Content
A page that needs writing or rewriting, or exists and is not being read by the models.
Schema
Structured data that makes an answer extractable, so a model parses rather than guesses.
Technical
Crawlability, rendering and robots rules: the mechanics of being retrievable at all.
Source
A domain worth getting cited by: third-party coverage the engines already trust.
Forum
A community thread shaping the answer, where an absent brand is an invisible one.
Sentiment
A claim about you that keeps resurfacing in answers and needs correcting at its source.
Each carries a priority score out of 100 built from business impact, visibility opportunity, competitive gap, ease and confidence. The weights are published in the product, so a prioritisation can be argued with rather than taken on faith. See how actions work.
04: closing the loop
Shipped is not the same as worked
Most content roadmaps end at published. This one ends at verified: after the work lands, the prompt is re-scanned, and the action is only marked impact verified if the measurement actually moved.
- New
- Accepted
- In progress
- Implemented
- Monitoring
- Re-scan needed
- Impact verified
A gap sprint you can hand to a writer
The gap sprint report pulls it together for a single window: the high-value prompts you lose, the winner and why they win for each, where AI cites competitors, your brand content gaps, a prioritised action backlog, the confidence and methodology behind it, and a next 30-day plan. Export it as CSV or HTML.
05: Questions
What content and SEO teams ask first
How is this different from tracking keyword rankings?
There is no position one in an AI answer, and no single answer everyone sees. Instead of a rank, you get a mention rate, a position within the answer, the competitors named alongside you, and the sources the model cited, all sampled repeatedly.
What is a citation gap?
A source that shapes answers in your category and does not cite you. We store every source an engine returns, classify the domain, and show which ones cite your competitors and not you.
What kind of work does CiteTrail recommend?
Six types: content, schema, technical, source, forum and sentiment. Each comes with the prompt it came from and the evidence behind it, so the person doing the work can see why.
How do I prove a change worked?
Re-scan. An action only reaches Impact verified after the prompt is measured again and the result moves. We do not credit an action for a change we did not measure.
Does CiteTrail audit my site as well?
Yes. Audit scans crawl your site and score 25+ AI-readiness factors, including schema, FAQ structure, internal linking and crawler access, with a specific fix for each finding.
How do I tell a real gap from one strange answer?
By sample size. Every finding shows how many runs and engines it is based on, and confidence is derived from both consistency and sample. Fewer than two runs is always labelled Low.
